BPA, BPF, BPS? What you need to know about the designations

Designations that BPA, BPF and BPS often appear in different contexts. Most often with an associated call to do everything to avoid them. But what do they really mean?

This is BPA

Bisphenols are a group of chemicals whose molecular structure is similar to each other. The best known of bisphenols is bisphenol A (designated BPA). BPA is primarily found in clear hard plastic (polycarbonate) which is used in plastic bottles, food containers and sippy cups. BPA makes plastic harder and more durable to high temperatures.

Studies have shown that BPA can be hormone disruptive, which can affect our ability to propagate us, and interfere with brain development. Particularly sensitive is pregnant women and young children. The dangerous chemicals are leaking mainly from the plastic when we eat or drink from a plastic container that has been heated.

When BPA begun to phase out, the use of other similar bisphenols has increased, for example BPF and BPS. How these bisphenols affect us are not as studied. But new studies show that they are potentially as harmful to us as BPA.

What can I do?

Since 2011, it is forbidden to use BPA in baby bottles throughout the EU. The year after the Swedish Government decided to prohibit the subject of packaging intended for children under 3 years. There are still no restrictions on the use of other bisphenols (such as BPF and BPS).

You as a consumer should be careful to check whether the products you buy for your child contain any of these topics. Especially if you trade products outside the EU.
